HISTORY
Erina is derived from the aboriginal term ‘Yerin’ or ‘Gerrin’. This is believed to mean ‘an object of fear’ which was more specifically used in relation to an initiation ceremony. The meaning of Erina can be described as ‘a place where the initiation ceremony was held’. The Erina district was home to the Guringai tribe. Signs of habitation in the local area include axe-grinding grooves and rock engravings on Kincumba Mountain. Ridgeline walking trails used by bushwalkers today were often part of a network of trails linking tribes, shelters, water & food sources as well as religious and cultural sites.
